UNIQUE LOCATION

Unique Location

Þorlákshöfn offers ideal—and globally exceptional—conditions for land‑based salmonid farming. Beneath the ground, vast amounts of crystal‑clear water flow towards the sea, amounting to roughly one cubic metre per second for every kilometre of coastline. The freshwater used in Thor’s operations represents only a small fraction of this volume. As the water travels through layers of lava rock, it gains both stability and exceptional purity—qualities that are essential for Thor’s high‑performance land‑based fish farming. Clean seawater is also accessible from underground, naturally filtered through the porous lava formations along the coastline.

The operation is built on access to some of the best freshwater and seawater available for land‑based aquaculture, drawn from wells near the shoreline. Clean water and seawater, combined with precise control of critical parameters such as flow, temperature, oxygen levels, and carbon dioxide, form the foundation for fish welfare, growth, and operational success. The region also has a long history in aquaculture, providing access to experienced personnel and a supportive community.
